A Lie of the Mind
by Sam Shepard
Wellfleet Hatbor Actors Theater, 1987
My very first directing assignment at WHAT. With Dennis Cunningham, Gip Hoppe, Dan Joy, Drew Meaney, Judith Partelow, Florence Phillips, Verrier Scattolini, and Ira Solet
Probably most significant tidbit: Dan Joy showed up, auditioned, won the role of Mike. We had no set designer, so I had sketched out something simple and that's what we were using. About a week into rehearsal Dan approaches me: "mind if I see what I can do?" He comes in with an amazing drawing. That was that - I handed the whole thing over to him. He was our resident set designer for the next 18 years. Continued to act as well, appearing in many shows over the years including Simpatico by Shepard, and Goose and TomTom, by David Rabe. Now works mostly in film as a scenic artist.
